Women’s ACCs Round 1B
Conditions: 3-8 kts shifty and puffy, 2-3 ft waves
The Lions competed at the Women’s ACCs for the first time since 2012! Elizabeth Frost (‘27) and Nadia Fisch (‘28) started in A fleet in 420s and Eva DeCastro (‘28) and Stella Manyan (‘27) started in B fleet in FJs. The regatta started off in postponement as the race committee waited for the wind to fill in. At 11:30am the fleet set out into the bay for some light wind racing. A fleet started off with a great set, tacking out at the boat and taking it up the right in the breeze to secure a 7th and a 9th! The wind started to shut off and the race committee continued racing in borderline 3.5 kts and shifty conditions. Racing got tough as wind shut off throughout the course. After five races per fleet, racing was called off and the lions headed in for the day.
On Sunday, the wind was light and we towed out to the bay again only to get 30 degree shifts, two general recalls, and one A fleet race that slowed as the wind shut off. The fleet made its way back in for postponement and waited until 12:30pm to start racing in the channel. The wind steadied as the sea breeze filled in, but the water grew choppy as afternoon boat traffic wake filled the river. DeCastro and Manyan kicked it off with some amazing racing, taking the pin and pointing it up the left and rounded in places as high as 4th and 6th! They got solid races in scoring 9th, 10th and 10th! After four more races, the regatta was called as we reached the 3:00pm last warning time.
Overall, the lions placed the highest in Columbia history at Women’s ACCs and are pumped to keep progressing as we meet our milestones. Stay turned for College of Charleston Women’s Open and ACCs Round 2!
