On the day of March 29, 2025, the Columbia sailing team traveled to Stony Brook to compete in the Stony Brook Cup. It was a great day for sailing, being in the mid-70s and sunny with a gusty west breeze. Jake Miller ‘27 and Chase O’Malley ‘26 in the A division and Alex Vincenti ‘26 and Alex Yuen ‘25 in the B division both rounded out their first set with three 2s. Jake and Chase started their second set off with a bullet, but then finished it off with two 6s due to a capsize and some rigging issues. Alex and Alex finished off their second set with two more 2s and then a bullet to round it out.
Around 3 pm, as A division was sent back out for their final set, the predicted back-door cold front arrived early, dropping temperatures almost 30 degrees and bringing with it a gusty Easterly. The committee decided to bring everyone into the beach and assess the situation after the front passed. The change in wind direction, along with the gusty conditions, made running additional races safely questionable, and, as the saying goes, the decision was made to call racing for the day, and they deemed enough races had been completed to call the regatta for the weekend.
The Lions finished the regatta in second place by one point after a close battle with Stony Brook University.
